What does zero-proof mean?
Zero-proof refers to beverages specifically crafted to deliver the flavour, body and complexity of traditional spirits or cocktails without containing alcohol (0.0% ABV). Unlike juices or soft drinks, zero-proof drinks rely on botanical extracts and macerated ingredients to give an adult taste profile.
Zero-proof meaning in drinks
“Proof” is an old measure of alcoholic strength. An 80-proof spirit is 40% alcohol by volume. The zero-proof meaning is the opposite: no measurable ethanol, written on the label as 0.0% ABV.
In bars, hotels and bottle shops the phrase now names a category — zero-proof spirits, zero-proof cocktails, zero-proof aperitifs — rather than a lab reading. In Singapore it usually signals a drink built like a proper cocktail, not a sweet soft drink in a coupe.
What zero-proof drinks are — and are not
- They are spirits or cocktails formulated for flavour, aroma and body at 0.0% ABV.
- They are not fruit juice, soda, cordial or a syrup-led mocktail.
- They are not automatically the same as every “non-alcoholic” label. Some non-alcoholic products may contain up to 0.5% ABV; true zero-proof is written 0.0%.
- They are designed to mix 1:1 in classic builds — gin and tonic, margarita, Negroni, old fashioned — with the same glassware and technique.
How 0.0% ABV drinks are made
Without ethanol to carry flavour or act as a preservative, producers extract character from botanicals. Typical methods include maceration, distillation of aromatics into hydrosols, and blending of peels, herbs, roots and spices until the liquid has structure on the palate.
That is why a zero-proof gin smells of juniper and citrus, or a zero-proof aperitif tastes bitter-sweet rather than sugary. The aim is an adult drink you would put on a cocktail list.

On local menus you will see “zero-proof”, “alcohol-free” and “0.0%” used side by side. For guests who are driving, cutting back, or choosing an alcohol-free option, the number that matters is the ABV on the bottle. Look for 0.0% ABV if you want no measurable alcohol.
